With everyone talking about the new CED’s emphasis on teaching religion and language through the lens of diffusion, I’m revamping my lessons on the world’s main religions.

Hearth -> Diffusion -> Current location-> # of Adherents/speakers

In hopes that I don’t get caught up teaching the religions and language tree in uber depth, the above will be my culture unit mantra!

When I start religion this week, I will begin by comparing universalizing and ethnic religions. I made guided lecture notes to hand out, and made a mix-and-match template to have my intern help cut and scramble 25 sets for student’s use. Click to get the free download.

If you’re looking for a mapping activity to do with the five major world religions, take a look at these.

I made five separate worksheets that small groups can complete, or individual students can tackle (one per night/day).

Religion Hearth Diffusion Hinduism PREVIEW-03

The worksheet asks for students to identify the hearth on the map, and sort data to show where the religion’s adherents predominate. Once students mark those countries on the map, they are to decide whether the religion fits contagious diffusion or relocation diffusion. They must also decide whether it is a universalizing or ethnic religion, based on its diffusion from the hearth…hopefully something they can see from the map.

I also have a single coloring book page for the major world regions and religions practiced.
