If you are looking for a greater understanding of the development of geography as an academic practice, I came across a playlist of lectures that I am very impressed with.

Much like historians study the contributions of Herodotus, Thucydides, Livy, Hegel, and Marx (all very Western, I know)…geography teachers should know about people like Eratosthenes, Ptolemy, Kant, Humboldt, Ratzel, Semple, and Sauer (Western again, I know).

This guy, Dr. Krishnanand (aka the Geoecologist), covers the evolution of geography from both East and West, from its origins, to its contemporary currents. If you are looking for PD in helping you understand where geography came from, this might be a good place to start. I am currently supplementing a book with these videos. The link to his full playlist is HERE and comes highly recommended.
