The purpose of this introductory activity is to have students learn and apply six social science perspectives that they will encounter throughout the course. You may have heard about E.S.P.N. or S.P.I.C.E. for the history classroom, but try your hand at S.P.E.E.D.S. for geography! Unlike E.S.P.N. and S.P.I.C.E., S.P.E.E.D.S considers the DEMOGRAPHIC and SPATIAL. The social sciences require us to view causes, events, and implications through multiple perspectives and lenses. Geography classes are in a unique position where we can use contemporary demographic statistics to understand spatial patterns and trends. What really sets geography apart is the spatial perspective that gets students thinking about how phenomenon is displayed across space. As students increase their skill level, they will be able to discuss course concepts through multiple social science perspectives.

These social science perspectives provide students with multiple potential pathways to respond to College Board’s free-response questions. In addition, S.P.E.E.D.S is easily transferable to other social studies classrooms that are likely not considering the demographic or spatial perspectives.
